What is the Reggio Emilia Model?
At Bartram Academy, we utilize the Reggio Emilia model in our approach to early education. This approach is play-based with teaching and structure worked into the mix. Our curriculum is designed to build on children’s interests as they discover them through play, art, and community events. Reggio Emilia is considered one of the most effective teaching methods for younger children, and below are the five principles of the Reggio Emilia model that we follow.
- Children Can Construct their Learning
Children are naturally curious about their surroundings and environment, which drives the interest in learning more. Bartram Academy provides a safe space for them to explore the world around them fully, and our staff is trained to help with children’s individual needs.
- Children Can Understand Situations Through Interactions
Children are meant to explore, not stay cooped up in one environment. We encourage social interaction between the children at our school so that they can learn from each other and develop critical social skills they will need throughout life.
- Children Can Communicate
In their own way, children communicate with each other and the world around them. The Reggio Emilia model promotes the development of their communication skills through exploration and observation.
- Children Learn Through their Environment
The Reggio Emilia model recognizes that the environment has the potential to inspire children. Providing children with a naturally lit, organized learning environment will encourage children to dive deeper into their interests through collaboration, communication, and exploration.
- Adults are Mentors and Guides
As adults following the Reggio Emilia model, our purpose is to observe children, listen to them, and discover what interests them in providing appropriate opportunities. All of our projects are child-led, with the adult facilitating the adventures and activities they want to pursue.
